Description

Comprising: a pair of brushed gold presentation cufflinks, the terminals spelling out the name Ludwig Victor in blue enamel, maker’s marks for Wilhelm Haarstrick, Austrian assay marks for gold; a pair of cufflinks, each composed of one caillouté gold terminal decorated with the blue enamelled letter A, maker’s mark for August Haarstrick, Austrian assay marks for gold; a pair of commemorative cufflinks decorated with three calibré-cut sapphire fleur-de-lys and blue enamelled Savoy knots, surmounted by red enamelled crowns; and two pairs of Swedish Royal presentation cufflinks decorated with three coronets applied with blue enamel, each signed Sporrong; partially illustrated.

Cf.: Walter Graser, Franz Hemmerle, Alexander von Württemberg (eds.), Kostbare Manschettenknöpfe – Von Pablo Picasso bis James Bond, Munich, Hirmer, 2016, pg. 35 for the pair of cufflinks decorated with a blue enamel A, pg. 29 for the sapphire and enamel Savoy and Bourbon-Parma wedding commemorative cufflinks, pg. 91 for one pair of the Royal Swedish presentation cufflinks, dated circa 1960.

The presentation cufflinks spelling LUDWIG VICTOR were given by Archduke Ludwig Victor of Austria (1842–1919), the youngest brother of Emperor Franz Joseph, to Robert, Duke of Württemberg (1873-1947).

The pair of cufflinks decorated with sapphire fleur-de-lys commemorates the wedding of Prince Louis of Bourbon-Parma (1899-1967) and Princess Maria Francesca of Savoy (1914-2001) celebrated on 23 January 1939 in Rome at the Quirinal Palace. The blue sapphire fleur-de-lys represent the groom’s Bourbon-Parma dynasty, while the blue enamel Savoy knots represent the bride’s Italian Royal Savoy family.
