"From 1958 to about 1965, Joseph Beuys worked on four sketchbooks collectively entitled "Projekt Westmensch 1958“. Exhibiting veritably the whole range of his artistic vocabulary, the pages of these books are filled with drawings, texts, watercolors, lists of words and notions, concepts and themes with numerous notations for future projects. While many of the pages are related directly to other works in Beuys oeuvre, there are some entirely enigmatic forms, conceptual references and codes that will prove a fascinating challenge to viewers and professional art historians alike. The rhythm of the entries, often separated by long series of blank pages, provide a very intimate insight into the artist‘s visual idiom and his universal thinking."

« De 1958 à 1965 environ, Joseph Beuys a travaillé sur quatre carnets de croquis intitulés collectivement Projekt Westmensch 1958. Les pages de ces carnets sont remplies de dessins, de textes, d'aquarelles, de listes de mots et de notions, de concepts et de thèmes, avec de nombreuses annotations pour des projets futurs, ce qui montre l'étendue de son vocabulaire artistique. Si de nombreuses pages sont directement liées à d'autres œuvres de Beuys, certaines formes, références conceptuelles et codes tout à fait énigmatiques constitueront un défi fascinant pour les spectateurs comme pour les historiens de l'art.
