Severin Roesen is one of the most celebrated American still life painters of the nineteenth century. Overflowing with blossoms of various types, Still Life with Flowers is emblematic of the artist's hyper-realistic approach to the still life tradition. Roesen was heavily inspired by the Dutch seventeenth and early eighteenth-century still life genre, which is apparent in the present example.
