Description

decorated with Egyptian's sphinges

Haut. 40 cm;

Height. 16 in

At the very end of the 18th century, the use of the athenienne, the quintessential French neoclassical piece of furniture, as a simple support for cassolettes, incense burners or jardinières, was gradually extended to the toilet. Artistic production was profoundly marked by a spell of Egyptomania, linked to the myth of Napoleon, which lasted throughout the 19th century. Percier et Fontaine, and later Denon, played a key role in this ornamental fashion linked to the land of the pharaohs. The bust topped with a nemesis remains the most representative decorative element of the Egyptian imprint on furniture and objects of the period. A model characteristic of this taste was sold at Sotheby's, Paris on July 7, 2022, lot 256.
