Claude Galle (1759 - 1815) was awarded the title of Master Bronzemaker in 1786 and became one of the most important bronzemakers of his time. He received numerous imperial commissions for Fontainebleau, Saint-Cloud, Meudon and various Italian palaces. A pair of ewers very similar to this one is preserved at Pavlovsk palace and is reproduced in Pavlovsk, le Palais et le Parc, Paris, 1993, t. I, p. 121, and in Pavlovsk, les Collections, t.II, p. 179.

The same handles are found on a pair of ewers attributed to Claude Galle (1759-1815) and illustrated in H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol.I, p.364, as well as on another pair, belonging to the Mobilier national and published in M.F. Dupuy-Baylet, L'Heure, le Feu, la Lumière : les bronzes du Mobilier national (1800-1870), Dijon, 2010, p.248-249. This handle model was also used in a very similar way with the winged young woman standing.
