Jacques-Joseph Lepaute (1750-1796), known as "de Bellefontaine," was a talented Parisian clockmaker of the 18th century. Originally from Bellefontaine near Luxembourg, he moved to Paris at a young age, gained notoriety after registering his master's letters, and created exceptional works in collaboration with artisans such as Robert Osmond, François Rémond, and Joseph Coteau. Despite some financial difficulties in the late 1770s, he was appointed "Horloger de Monsieur" by the Count of Provence, the future Louis XVIII. Today, his creations are preserved in prestigious collections, such as the Wallace Collection and the Victoria & Albert Museum.

The sobriety of the case lines, the rare combination of ebony and mahogany, and the presence of griffins suggest that this piece might be the work of Bernard Molitor.
