A Roman Bronze Protome

circa 2nd Century A.D.


in the form of the head of a bearded god turned slightly to his right, and wearing a chiton and himation, with vigorously modeled beard, full outlined lips, straight nose with flaring nostrils, large pierced eyes, and furrowed brow, his hair swept up above the forehead and falling in long crescentic and wavy locks over the ears.


Height 9.2 cm. 

Jan Mitchell (1913-2009), New York, probably acquired in the 1960s or earlier

by descent to the present owner
