A gold and enamel snuff box, Les Freres Toussaint, Hanau, circa 1790
rectangular with cut corners, the lid enamelled en plein en grisaille with Louisa, after a lithographic print of a painting by George Morland, published by I. R. Smith (1789), framed by polished gold and opaque white enamel rim and gold and dark blue paillon border, the sides and base of opaque pale blue enamel with gold paillon Vitruvian scroll border, the angles decorated with paillon vases on dark blue enamel ground, the base similarly decorated, maker’s mark, Hanau bird’s head control mark to rim, in original leather presentation case
