The German portraitist Wolfgang Heimbach spent most of his career in Denmark, where he worked for the Copenhagen elite and portrayed King Frederick III and Queen Sophie Amalie on several occasions. Heimbach, who was deaf-mute, depicted his sitters with an unpretentious sincerity. As the inscriptions indicate, he executed the present pair soon after the wife's death on 11 May 1653.
