Where acquired by the present owner.

This intriguing work was painted by a highly proficient Florentine artist working in the third or fourth decade of the fifteenth century. While the gold-leaf background adds an archaicizing element to the composition, the Madonna's elongated form and spindly fingers recall figures that appear in works by the contemporary painters Domenico di Michelino and Apollonio di Giovanni. The influence of the young Paolo Uccello is also evident in the figure of Christ, modelled almost like a classical statue with crisply delineated contours.
