Gennaro Greco produced this charming pair of vedute ideate, or ideal views, in Naples around the turn of the eighteenth century. Drawing on the rich Italian tradition of vedutisti, Greco conceived his illusionistic scenes with fantastical, yet meticulously rendered, architectural elements in theatrical tableaux. Greco almost certainly produced such works for the open market (rather than on commission), underscoring the genre’s popularity.
