Her estate sale, Sotheby's New York, 28 January 2005, lot 552;
Where acquired by Aso O. Tavitian.
This delightful quartet of Venetian capricci, or imaginary views, repurposes motifs invented by members of the Guardi family, among the most celebrated artistic dynasties of vedutisti. The ruined arch with suspended lantern in Capriccio with an Ogival Arch appears in numerous Guardi compositions, as do the architectural elements included in Capriccio with a Church Seen Through a Portico.1 Capriccio with a Rustic Cottage corresponds with a painting in the Fondazione Cini, Venice;2 and Capriccio with an Obelisk and Lagoon combines elements of two large-scale paintings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (inv. nos. 41.80, 53.225.4).3
1 See, for instance, A Caprice with a Ruined Arch, oil on canvas. London, National Gallery, inv. no. NG2518.
2 A. Morassi, Guardi, l’opera completa di Antonio e Francesco Guardi, Venice 1973, vol. I, cat. no. 846; vol. II, reproduced fig. 765.
3 Although they entered the Metropolitan’s collection at different moments, by 1893 both were in the collection of Paolo di Coloredo Mels at Colloredo di Monte Albano, near Udine.
