the semi-elliptical cross-banded tops inlaid with a lambrequin and floral scrolled design, over leaf-carved, beaded and fluted friezes, with a ribbon-twist lower border, on turned and fluted tapering legs, previously but probably not originally painted white, re-gilt

Probably commissioned by John Smith for the Drawing Room at Combe Hay Manor, Somerset c.1775;

By descent to his son, Colonel Smith Leigh (died without issue 1833);

Sold with the house to Samuel Butler, c.1833;

Thence by descent to his son George Smart (d.1939);

Sold with the house to Mr and Mrs Charles Robertson, 1939;
