The winged putti carrying flames on our candelabra were inspired by statuettes by Claude Michel, known as Clodion (1738-1814), who specialised in this type of small figure. Our example is similar to the pair of candelabras attributed to the bronzemaker André-Antoine Ravrio (1759-1814), kept at the Residenz in Munich, and to the one kept at the Mobilier National (GML-5879-001). Although the poses of the putti differ slightly from one version to another, our pair being slightly less mobile, the stylistic treatment is very similar. Similar candelabras with simply fluted pedestals, as on our example, are known: a pair from the collection of D. Nieuwenhuis, Amsterdam, in 1975, and two other pairs sold in 1983, one of which came from the Paul Wallraf collection (Sotheby's London, 8 and 9 December 1983, lot 486).
