Our candelabra correspond to the description in Louis-Stanislas Lenoir-Ravrio's 1806 delivery log for the Château des Tuileries, which reads: '2 pairs of large four-light pyramid candelabra with vases in the middle, bases with eagles, marble columns 2,400/2,240' for the Prince's bedroom in the flat of the Enfants de France at the Château des Tuileries. As this delivery could not have been made to the Enfants de France of the imperial family, it could have been made to Prince Eugène de Beauharnais, son of Joséphine de Beauharnais, Empress of the French until 1809. However, the absence of an inventory number or Tuileries mark means that we cannot state the provenance with certainty.
A similar example was sold at Coutau-Bégarie in Paris on 28 November 2012, lot 368. The dimensions, design and ornamentation are identical, but the shaft is in Griotte red marble and the central vase is partially patinated.
