Le baptême (The Christening) depicts a young couple during the Directoire (the period after the French Revolution between 1795-1799) leaving a church following the christening of their child. This work was purchased by the American financier and philanthropist John Jacob Astor III in 1878. His nephew Jon Jacob Astor IV, died on the Titanic.
A photogravure was made by Goupil & Co., published by M. Knoedler & Co. in 1879, with original hand colouring.
