Framed: 42 by 58 cm, 16½ by 22¾ in.
Executed in 1878.
Polenov painted the present study during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78. He had been invited to join the army as a war artist by Tsesarevich Alexander Alexandrovich, the future Tsar Alexander III, and served on the Bulgarian front.
