Matthias Eberle, Max Liebermann 1847-1935, vol. II, Munich, 1996, p. 1169, no. 1926/32, illustrated

Autumn Walk in Tiergarten Garden, Berlin belongs to Liebermann's celebrated series of works depicting the bourgeoisie of Berlin at leisure. Liebermann bought his house by the Wannsee, on the outskirts of Berlin, in 1910, and the bustling crowds of Berliners along the outdoor cafés by the lake, rivers and in the city gardens became the key subjects of his art. From 1917 onwards the artist painted many views of the park, capturing the light effects of different seasons or times of day and studying the relationship between nature and urban life.
