Georges Jacob (1739-1814), maître 1765
Partridge Fine Arts, London
Georges Jacob was arguably the most important menuisier active in Paris in the final decades of the Ancien Régime, and along with Jean-Baptiste Claude Sené was the principal supplier of seat furniture and console tables to the French court. He often stamped his works G.IACOB, and the additional stamp IB is believed to be that of a woodcarver whom Jacob would have subcontracted to execute the highly refined sculptural decoration for which his workshop was renowned. It has been recorded on a few surviving works by Jacob including a console table supplied to the Comte d’Artois at Versailles (sold Christie’s Paris, 13 April 2017, lot 235, a set of four white and red painted fauteuils sold Christie’s Paris 13 December 2006, lot 310, and a set of four giltwood fauteuils in the Metropolitan Museum, New York.
