Description

gouache heightened with gold on paper, the yellow panel above inscribed in black devanagari script at upper left 'dutiye malkos raga' (second Malkos Raga), numbered indisctinctly in devanagari at upper right, with narrow gold border, black rules, red margins

painting: 21.7 by 14.1cm.

leaf: 27.2 by 19.6cm.

Acquired from Robert Ellsworth, New York, July 1993

The figures in the painting are in the style of the Kota artist now referred to as 'Painter C' who is thought to have been active between 1710 and 1730. An illustration from a ragamala series attributed to 'the Kota Master C' by Stuart Cary Welch, sold in these rooms recently, see Sotheby's London, The Edith & Stuart Cary Welch Collection, 25 October 2023, lot 43.


Another painting from this ragamala series depicting Kedar Ragini with a similar insciption in the text panel, previously in the Heeramaneck Collection, sold at Christie's New York, 20 March 2002, lot 151.
