Description

An Attic Black-figured Neck Amphora

attributed to the Edinburgh Painter, circa 500-490 B.C.


with torus foot, triple handles and echinus mouth, painted in front with an assembly of the gods on Olympos, Hermes at right wearing the petasos, Herakles at left gesturing and holding his club, between them Apollo playing the kithara, Athena wearing the aegis and holding a spear, and Dionysos seated and holding vines and a kantharos, and in back with the departure of a warrior and Scythian archer, the warrior with high-crested helmet of Corinthian type, spear, and circular shield emblazoned with a dolphin, the archer wearing long trousers and tall cap, and holding a bow, a draped man with a staff on either side, rays and linked dotted lotus buds above the foot, palmettes in the handle zones, tongues on the shoulder, linked palmettes on the neck, the details in added red and white.
