Description

Ugo Cipriani (Menneville)

Italian

1887 - 1960

Reclining nude

signed: MENNEVILLE

white marble

28 by 83cm., 11 by 32 5/8 in.

Ugo Cipriani, a native of Florence, worked in the Art Deco style and generally signed his sculptures with his pseudonym: Menneville. While little biographical information is known about the artist, it has been recorded that he exhibited in 1907 and 1908 in the Società delle Belle Arti in Florence. He moved to France when Mussolini rose to power in Italy, and settled in Paris where he remained until his death.

This expertly carved marble depicts a reclining nude, which demonstrates Cipriani's talent in conveying a naturalistic anatomy with fine texture and detail.
