Description

Ercole Rosa

Italian

1846 - 1893

Phryne

white marble

87cm., 34¼in.

Please note that the cataloguing has been updated to reflect that this is a work by the sculptor Ercole Rosa. Sotheby's is grateful to Prof. Alfonso Panzetta for kindly confirming the authorship.

Though unsigned, the present model is identical to the Phryne by Ercole Rosa illustrated in Panzetta (op. cit.), dating to 1874. The model has sometimes been referred to as La Lampada Infranta (The Broken Lamp), and is recorded by the antiquarian Augusto Jandolo (op. cit.), who met Marietta del Frata, Rosa's model for the Phryne.
