Description

Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn

1606 - 1669

Jan Lutma, Goldsmith (B., Holl. 276; New Holl. 293; H. 290)

Etching with engraving and drypoint, 1656, a fine, early and atmospheric impression of New Hollstein's second/third state (of five), printing with rich burr and a light, selectively wiped tone, the signature of Jan Lutma’s son François Lutma barely visible in the dense hatching lower right, just beginning to show touches of wear in the sitter’s costume, on gampi Japan paper, framed

sheet: 203 by 150mm 9 by 5⅞in

Ex coll. John Barnard (L. 219); Arthur Melville Champernowne (L. 153)

It appears that New Hollstein's second and third states are indeed identical and that the inscription underneath the window and the barely legible one in the densely worked area at lower right were in fact engraved at the same time.
