This work is an eighteenth-century copy of Rembrandt's poignant portrait of his wife, Saskia van Uylenburgh (Dresden, Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, inv. no. Gal.-Nr. 1562). She looks directly out and offers the viewer a pink carnation, symbolic of marital fidelity.
