When the Patek Philippe reference 5070 was introduced in 1998, it was the first chronograph-only wristwatch released by the brand since the 1960s, when the iconic reference 1463 ceased production. The watch is still considered one of Patek Philippe's largest wristwatches, measuring in at an impressive 42 mm diameter. Instantly popular, the reference 5070 received a luxurious platinum case in 2008 to commemorate its decadal anniversary, making it even more rare than the traditional models produced in pink gold, white gold, and yellow gold versions.

Reintroducing their chronograph-only line in such bold fashion, the enormous 42 mm case diameter and the thick stepped bezel paid tribute to the legendary reference 2512, which measured at a gigantic 46.2 mm. The 5070 calls on numerous notable stylistic influences that are embedded throughout the piece; from the Art Deco period shape to the large aviator's style reflected on the dial. What makes the reference 5070 outstanding is that it is the last chronograph collection to utilize the famous Lemania 2310 movement before Patek Philippe switched to an in-house caliber with its successor, the reference 5170.
