Description

A Roman Opaque White Mould-Blown Glass Flask

circa 1st Century A.D.

with a cylindrical neck and everted lip, the body with six arcades divided by thin columns, each with a jug, a hydria or kantharos, a garland with grape bunches around the lower body.

Flasks of this type were commonly produced in Sidon in the 1st century A.D., and have been interpreted as referring to the actual vessels and architectural features of the temples of Bacchus and Astarte there. For a discussion of the 'Temple series', see (G. A. Eisen, Glass: Its Origin, History, Chronology, Technic and Classification to the Sixteenth Century, New York, 1927, p. 131 ff.), and for examples blown from similar moulds see Sotheby's, London, December 17th, 2020, no. 7, illus. and Bonham's, London, July 6th, 2017, no. 165.
