Description

Neapolitan School, 17th century

A hell scene

oil on panel

panel: 22½ by 13¾ in.; 57.2 by 34.9 cm.

framed: 27¼ by 19¼ in.; 69.2 by 48.9 cm.

This intriguing panel of the infernal underworld abounds with figures and creatures and very well may be a fragment of a once larger composition.  The anonymous artist of this panel seems to have been influenced somewhat by the underworld scenes of Jacob Isaacsz. van Swanenburg, a Northern artist active in Naples from 1598 to 1615.   At the same time, some of the creatures in this composition find parallels in the works of Filippo Napoletano.
