Although the artist of this playful work has not been identified, the surprised and informal expression of the sitter suggests that is a self-portrait of the artist or a study for another work. Studying one's own facial expressions to capture a range of human emotions became popular with artists like Rembrandt and later with Joseph, Baron Ducreux.
