Léon Blum was the first Socialist Prime Minister of France as leader of the Popular Front in 1936. He spent the Second World War as a prisoner in German concentration camps. This article addresses the attempts by the Communist Party, which was very powerful in the immediate post-war years, to take control of the Trade Union movement.
