A two-colour gold and enamel snuff box, late 19th century


oval, the lid centred with an enamel plaque representing Pyramus and Thisbe, the scene illuminated by a putto holding a torch, framed by a chased laurel wreath and crowned by a bow, the ground enamelled to simulate lapis lazuli and decorated with chased gold sunflowers and openwork ornaments, within opaque white enamel border decorated with chased festoons and floral bands, ribbon and bow thumbpiece, the sides set with circular enamel plaques of winged putti within swags, alternating with laurel wreaths on a chased sunray ground, the base centred with a plaque of two classical allegories, French prestige marks including maker’s mark PR, purporting to be that of Paul Robert, charge mark of Prévost, no discharge mark, Paris troisième titre 1819-1838, Paris date letter, the interior of the base numbered: 1618
