Executed in 1921-22, just months after the artist relocated permanently to the South of France, where Matisse would work for the remainder of his career, the present work is one of the earliest and finest examples of this body of paintings. Awash in rich color reflective of the splendorous Mediterranean sun, Torse de jeune fille synthesizes Matisse’s enthrallment with textiles and costumes to create an enchanting reverie.
