The first diamond engagement ring is said to have been commissioned by Archduke Maximillian of Austria in 1477 for Mary of Burgundy. However, their rise to popularity came from the NW Ayer advertising campaign for De Beers which stated them as ‘forever. Being 10 on the Mohs hardness scale they are renowned for their durability and strength, making them a fitting symbol of enduring love and commitment. Although faultless as engagement rings they are the perfect celebration of life’s milestones and achievements. Monarchs such as Queen Elizabeth I of England and Empress Eugénie of France were renowned for their extensive pearl collections, which are displayed in the multitude of portraits of them.
