From 16–23 March we are pleased to announce Japanese Woodblock Prints, continuing Sotheby’s biannual Japanese woodblock print online sales. Renowned ukiyo-e artists such as Hokusai, Hiroshige and Hasui will take centre stage with a selection of Japan's quintessential designs.

Sotheby’s is pleased to present Japanese Woodblock Prints, to be held exclusively online from 16-23 March 2023. Designs by artists such as Hokusai, Hiroshige and Hasui are offered alongside seminal artists of ukiyo-e, shin-hanga and sosaku hanga. The sale surveys early woodblock printing up to the 21st century. Impressions of Hokusai’s Surugadai in Edo and Poem by Chunagon Yakamochi are followed by Hiroshige’s dynamic depiction of an eagle in flight in Fukagawa Susaki and Jumantsubo. The sale closes with prints from 20th century artists such as Yoshida Hiroshi, Kawase Hasui and Ito Shinsui, all of whom successfully redefined woodblock printing for their age.
