Description

Designed as a sequence of enteral knot motifs formed of writhing serpents with engraved snake scale decoration wrapping around cabochon star sapphires, length approximately 185mm.

Snakes are among the most symbolically rich animals in mythology, embodying a powerful blend of life, renewal, and protection. While they can represent both good and evil, in many ancient cultures they were revered for their positive attributes, particularly their association with new life, transformation, and guardianship. Much of their mythical meaning stems from their biological traits, such as the ability to shed their skin, which made them potent symbols of regeneration and immortality. In Ancient Greece, snakes were especially linked with protection and renewal. The snake watching over Athens from the Athenian Acropolis was said to protect the city, symbolizing its enduring strength and resilience. In this context, a snake was not only a guardian but a continuous symbol of the city’s renewal and vitality, reflecting its ongoing life and endurance. When seen in jewellery, snake motifs may have been intended to protect and renew the wearer, suggesting a talismanic quality to this piece.
