Description

Alexandre Calame

Vevey 1810 - 1864 Menton

Peasant Hut

Oil on paper laid down on board

31,2 x 49 cm; 12¼ by 19¼ in.

Amélie Calame, Geneva (as per a label on the reverse);

Thence by decent to Arthur Calame (the artist's son);

Anonymous sale, Geneva, 15 April 1922, lot 188;

Louis Bescarelet, Geneva;

Anonymous sale, Sotheby's, New York, 22 January 2004, lot 241.

Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute and The William Benton Museum of Art, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Alpine Views: Alexandre Calame and the Swiss Landscape, October 2006-August 2007 (as per a label on the reverse).

This composition by Alexandre Calame may be compared to another work by the artist, Houses in Savoy, dated between 1832 and 1836, which is reproduced in the catalogue raisonné by Valentina Anker (Alexandre Calame, Vie et Œuvre, Fribourg 1987, p. 323, cat. no. 5).

The old label on the back of the painting indicates that the work was identified in the estate inventory of his son, Arthur Calame, in Geneva on 15 April 1922 – a provenance that adds to the work’s historical value.
