Professor Thomas Engel was already an internationally known and award winning scientist, particularly in the field of polymers and organic chemistry. Having collected watches for many years, he decided to try his hands at making and developing complicated watches, with a particular passionate interest in the life and works of Abraham-Louis Breguet, on whom he wrote a book. According to the family, there were so few examples of Breguet travelling clocks available on the market, that they decided to make their own. When they showed the finished clock to a dealer friend of theirs in Zurich, he was delighted to find that the original Breguet case he had fitted the clock perfectly, and so it remains with the piece today.
