Condition
Strip of gummed paper attached at edge of sheet, verso, round all four sides. Light water stains, upper left part of sheet. Very small losses, both bottom corners. Two small tears, upper left edge. Drawing otherwise in good, strong condition. Sold in an antique dark wood frame (CHECK)

Weyer spent almost all of his career working as a successful painter and print designer in his native Nürnberg, where he was the city painter from 1615 until his death. Earlier, between 1602 and 1604, he travelled to the Netherlands, and a sketchbook from this trip survives.1 Despite Weyer's work for print publishers, his drawings are rare. Some, such as the 1613 study of The Fall of Phaeton, in Vienna2, are sketchier than the present work, but another sheet very comparable to this in terms of style, a depiction of Susannah and the Elders, signed with initials in the same way as this and dated 1614, was sold in Berlin some twenty years ago.3 1.
