Condition
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching to a repaired C-shaped tear in the canvas, right of centre, measuring 3 by 4 cm. There is also retouching in the upright beam just to the left of this, as well as to a possible old tear, upper right, 3 cm. long. There is a further, small retouching in the tinderbox held by the seated man wearing white, and in his chair and the ground beneath it. There is a fine line of retouching to a superficial surface scratch, upper left, approx. 10 cm. long, and there are pinprick retouchings scattered throughout. None of these distract from the legibility of the image.
