Condition

The two bases clearly and fully marked. The nozzles and snuffers clearly part-marked. The scissors fully marked. Excellent overall condition; nice gauge of silver, good shape, crisp engraving. The welled bases with a few scratches. The balsa wood/papier mache interior lining is discouloured and water damaged but good for age. Closes together well. Very good overall.

The monogram CR below a royal crown is that of Queen Charlotte (1744-1818), wife of George III. Born Sophia Charlotte, she was the daughter of Duke Charles Louis Frederick of Mecklenburgh-Strelitz and his wife, Princess Elizabet Albertina of Saxe-Hildburghausen. These candlesticks were evidently part of a group of such items; another, single, similarly engraved travelling candlestick, struck with the same maker’s mark, London, 1803, was sold at Christie’s, London on 23 April 1965, lot 94. See also another pair of travelling candlesticks, also Samuel Whitford, London, 1815, which appear to be engraved with Queen Charlotte’s monogram and crown together with another monogram and coronet, sold Christie’s, London, 6 July 1977, lot 122.

The silver snuffer maker, Wilkes Booth (1752/53-1817), who entered his first mark on 11 October 1787, was the great uncle of the American actor John Wilkes Booth (1838-1865) who on 14 April 1865 fatally shot President Abraham Lincoln at Ford’s Theatre, Washington, D.C.
