Henry Taylor’s 'The Young, The Brave, Bobby Hutton' R.I.P Oakland, California depicts 17-year-old Bobby Hutton, also known as ‘Lil Bobby’ who was one of the first members and the original treasurer of the Black Panther movement. On April 6, 1968, Hutton was killed by the Oakland Police during an ambush on the police department. This ambush was catalyzed by the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr that had occurred just two days prior in Memphis. Despite the fact that Hutton surrendered to the police and followed orders to keep his hands in the air, he was shot more than twelve times. The death of Bobby Hutton was a crucial event in the history of the Black Panther and Civil Rights Movements, becoming a rallying cry against police brutality across the nation. Henry Taylor’s portrait of Bobby Hutton vividly captures the young boy’s legacy in American history, and furthermore summons our reflection on parallel events in today’s world, more than 50 years later.
