Excellent condition overall. Small loss on the reverse of the proper right head. Little losses on the tap of the box as visible on catalogue illustration. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture.

Par la délicatesse de son décor sculpté, cette boîte waka huia témoigne du soin accordé par les artistes Maori aux créations d'une très grande valeur symbolique. Destinée à conserver les ornements en néphrite et les plumes précieuses de l'oiseau huia qui ornaient les coiffes des grands chefs, elle est sculptée à ses extrémités de têtes de tiki visant à protéger son contenu. Le décor abondant d'incisions - tout en courbes et en contre-courbes - donne à l'ensemble de l'œuvre une tension remarquable, transcendant le pouvoir apotropaïque des représentations de tiki. Apanage des personnes de haut rang, ces boîtes étaient suspendues au faîtage de la maison du chef - d'où la très belle patine d'usage, profonde, brun rouge et brillante sur les parties saillantes.
