Ce masque tatanua illustre - par la remarquable élaboration de sa coiffe et de son iconographie - le pouvoir de fascination qu'ont exercé les arts de Nouvelle-Irlande dès leur découverte par les Européens à la fin du XIXe siècle. Destiné, durant les danses clôturant les rituels funéraires malangan, à provoquer un choc visuel lorsqu'en tournant, le masque change d'apparence, la coiffe se divise en une partie surmodelée d'une coque en chaux à décor de volutes et une autre en toile, elle est surmontée d'une crête formée d'une touffe de fibres végétales. La majesté de la coiffe accentue la force du visage aux traits serrés. Mis en valeur par la grande finesse des motifs sculptés et peints, il souligne les critères de la beauté masculine en Nouvelle-Irlande : nez large, lobes d'oreilles très étirés et percés, et grande bouche aux dents signifiées. L'agressivité de l'expression est augmentée par la - rare - représentation de serpents sortant de la bouche. S'ajoute son très bel état de conservation.
