Drawn in London on July 19, 1938, this is a life portrait drawing of Sigmund Freud, done in the sitter’s presence in his London home upon Dali’s sole meeting with the founder of psychoanalysis. During the visit, in the company of Stefan Zweig, Dali made two portraits, both of which prophetically depicted Freud in his final months prior to his death. At the meeting, Freud made comments on Dali’s painting Metamorphosis of Narcissus (1937) and remarked that Dali “looks like a fanatic – small wonder that they have a Civil War in Spain if you look like that”. This extraordinary meeting of three iconic personalities had a profound impact on Dali’s interest in psychoanalysis, his approach to Surrealism and the world of dreams.
