''Make-up' is a feminine concern upon which it would be indiscreet for a modern man to advise. Cennino Cennini, however, sometime around 1400, had no qualms: 'With the red colour (rossetta) touch in the lips and the colour in the cheeks. My master was accustomed to put the colour in the cheeks nearer the ear than the nose, because it assisted in giving relief to the face.' I am informed by one learned in such matters that that is all very well, but everything depends on whether the face be long or broad.'
