Condition

The canvas is laid on board which is flat and providing a good structural support for the picture. The paint surface may benefit from a light clean. UNDER ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT There are a few very minor retouchings in the background. FRAME The picture is contained in a simple wooden frame, painted cream.

This picture was originally a study for the figure on the left in Gleaming Waters, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1911 (Christie's, London, 30 November 2000, lot 22). The model was Tuke's boat-keeper Charlie Mitchell (1885-1957) painted on Newporth Beach in Falmouth.
