An encyclopaedic work, encompassing the whole world. The first volume comprises just two chapters, the first on 'The history of the circum-navigators', the second 'Comprehending the discovery, settlement, and commerce of the East-Indies'. The latter, which is over 600 pages, includes the accounts of William de Rubruquis, Marco Polo, Francis Pirard de Laval, Commodore Beaulieu, Mandelslo, Tavernier, James Cunningham (on Chusan), William Adams (Japan), and others. It includes the first English map of New Holland. Volume 2 deals with the rest of the world, particularly the Americas, though also with accounts of interest in the Middle East and northern China.
