This is the first full description of the welwitschia, discovered in present-day Angola by the Austrian botanist Friedrich Welwitsch in 1859. Also bound in this volume is Robert Brown, “Description of the female flower and fruit of Rafflesia Arnoldi”, also extracted from the Transactions (volume 19), and Fée’s “Mimosa pudica, L. Mémoire physiologique et organographique sur la sensitive et les plantes dites sommeillantes” (Strasbourg, 1849).
