BRIGHT COPY OF SOLVYN'S EXTENSIVE PORTRAYAL OF INDIAN CULTURE AND COSTUMES.
Volume I is devoted to religious castes and ceremonies; volume II to occupations and musical instruments; volume III to sailing craft including those used by Hindus in the Malay Peninsula; and volume IV to plants, domesticated and other animals.
Frans Balthazar Solvyns (1760-1824), a native of Antwerp, travelled to India in the 1790s, spending several years studying and recording the life and customs of the Hindus. He issued a set of the plates, 250 in all, in Calcutta in 1799, under the title The Manners, Customs and Dresses of the Hindoos. On the return voyage to Europe, Solvyns was shipwrecked on the coast of Spain and lost many of his original notes and drawings. During the course of publication of the present work in Paris in partnership with his wife, Mary Anne Greenwood, Solvyns exhausted her not inconsiderable fortune, leaving her virtually penniless following his death in Antwerp in 1824.
