The first official account of the development of the atomic bombs and the physical processes behind them, which Smyth was commissioned to write by Major General Leslie R. Grovers, Jr., the director of the Manhattan Project. It was released to the public on 12 August 1945, a few days after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and three days prior to the end of the war. In America it was published by the Government Printing Office and Princeton University Press. This is the issue reprinted in London by His Majesty's Stationery Office.
